Assos, Behramkale

Though officially named Behramkale, most people still call the town by its ancient name of Assos. The town is on the Biga Peninsula, although the peninsula is known by its ancient name, Troad. The town itself is on the Adramyttian Gulf...

It is possible to see much of the surrounding area from the top of a Trachyte Crag. From this temple, it was possible to see Lesbos in the south, Pergamum in the southeast, and Mount Ida of Phrygia in the east. To the north, the Tuzla River flows. To the northwest, there is the gate to the city of two massive Hellenic columns that still exist today.

Assos had a harbor, which was the only good harbor on the 80 kilometres (50 miles) of the north coast of the Adramyttian Gulf. This made Assos a key shipping station through the Troad...

Many of the old buildings of Assos are in ruins today, but Behramkale (the city's modern name) is still active. It still serves as a port for Troad. Temple ruins remain.

Down the steep seaward side of the hill at the water's edge is the hamlet called Iskele (meaning Dock or Wharf), with old stone houses now serving as inns, pensions and restaurants. There is a small pebbly beach. There are boat tours and tours of the hamlet itself. Although the one lane road to the hamlet is steep with sheer drops, the sea front has a constant stream of cars and minibuses arriving from dawn to dusk.

Sevim & Necdet Kent Library (restored by Rahmi Koc)

Eski adi : Agios Yannis Kilisesi

Ayvalik-Alibey Adası’nın girisini, Ortacag Hisarı seklinde süsleyen bu manastır ve kilise; Edremitli iki kesis tarafından, Fatih Sultan Mehmet’in Istanbul’u fethinden cok kısa bir sure önce kurulmus ve Aziz Yahya’ya (St. John, St. Yuhanna) atfedilmistir.

Devrinde çok önemli azizleri, patrikleri ve kesisleri bunyesinde barindiran bu manastirin en önemli sahsiyetlerinden birisi de Patrik Paisos’tur. Kendisi burada bir dönem inzivaya cekilmistir.

Patrik Teodosios zamanında İstanbul’daki Fener Rum Patrikhanesi’ne baglanan manastırın ana kilisesi kuzeybatı kısmında bulunmaktadir. Bu Sapel de mimarisiyle manastırın vazgeçilmez bir parçasidir. Aynı zamanda buradaki kitapligi 1835 senesinden itibaren zenginlesmeye baslamis, dini kitaplar yanında 17. ve 18. Asrın kilise hukuku hakkındaki yayınlarıyla da ün salmistir.

1912 yılında yasanan mübadele (zorunlu goc) sonrası Sapel zamanla tahrip olmustur.

Sapelin batı tarafında oldugu soylenen ve buyuk bir olasilikla manastıra un saglayan degirmenden geriye kalan ise sadece temel taslarıydı.

Bugünkü: Sevim ve Necdet H. Kent Kitaplığı

Yillar yili harap bir sekilde kalan degirmen ve kilise; Rahmi M. Koc’un kültür varlığı olan bu eski eserlerin kurtarılmasına yönelik girisimleri, maddi-manevi katkilari ile restore edilmis ve böylelikle Alibey Adası 07.08.2007 tarihinde önemli bir kitaplığa kavuşturulmuştur.

Rahmi M. Koç Müzecilik ve Kültür Vakfı bünyesinde hizmet verecek olan bu kitaplığa; ilerleyen yaşı nedeni ile göz sağlığı bozulan, “Göremediğime değil, okuyamadığıma üzülüyorum.” diyen Emekli Büyükelçi Necdet H. Kent’in ve eşinin ismi verilmiştir. Necdet H. Kent’in oğlu Muhtar Kent, merhum babasından kalma bin üç yüzü aşkın kitabı bu kitaplığa bağışlamıştır.

Değirmenin giriş katında hediyelik objeler ve yörenin özel zeytinyağını bulabilir, terasın büyülü manzarası eşliğinde dinlenirken, Cafenin servisinden yararlanabilirsiniz.

Sayın Necdet Kent ve Sayın Sevim Kent Necdet Kent (1911-2002) İkinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Musevilere yardımcı olabilmek için kendi hayatını tehlikeye atan bir Türk diplomatıdır. 1941 ve 1944 seneleri arasında Marsilya Başkonsolosu olarak görev yapmıştır. II. Dünya Savaşı sırasında Fransa’da yaşayan ve belgeleri yeterli olmayan onlarca Türk Museviye Türk Vatandaşlığı hakkını kazandırmıştır.

Sayın Kent; 1943 senesinde Türk Vatandaşı olan 70 Museviyi, Auschwitz Toplama Kampı’na götürecek olan trene binerek, bu kişileri trenden indirmeleri konusunda Alman Subayları ikna etmiştir.

Kent’in vatanseverliği bu tek olay ile de sınırlı değildir. Nazi’lerin Musevilere karşı olan düşmanlığını taklit eden Marsilya’daki bazı konsolosların aksine Fransa’nın güneyinde yaşayan ve geçerli Türkiye Cumhuriyeti pasaportu olmayan çok sayıda Musevi Türk vatandaşına Türk kimliği sağlamıştır.

2001 senesinde Kent yine kendisi gibi Musevileri Nazi soykırımından koruyan iki diplomat ile birlikte Türk Dışişleri tarafından Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Üstün Hizmet Madalyası ile ayrıca soykırım sırasında Musevilerin kurtulmasına yardımcı olduğu için İsrail’in verdiği özel bir madalya ile ödüllendirilmiştir.

Kent, İkinci Dünya Savaşı’nda sonra New York’ta Türkiye’nin Başkonsolosu olarak görev yaptı ve Tayland, Hindistan, İran, İsveç ve Polonya’nın büyükelçiliğini üstlendi.

Sevim Kent:
Sevim Kent (1918-2000) Ayvalık cemiyet ve iş hayatının önde gelen şahsiyetlerinden Merhum Sezai Ömer Madra’nın kızıydı. 1950 senesinde Necdet Kent’le evlenerek New York’a taşındı. Tanınmış bir ressam ve seramik sanatçısı idi.

Ziyaretle ilgili bilgiler:
Kitaplık 1 Haziran ve 31 Ekim tarihleri arasında 9:30’dan 17:30’a kadar açıktır. Pazartesi günleri kapalıdır. Kış sezonunda ise sadece Cuma ve Cumartesi günleri hizmet vermektedir. İnternet erişimi mevcuttur.

Giriş ücretsizdir. Ayrıca Kitaplık’ın terasında sıcak içeceklerin ve meşburatların servis edildiği bir café vardır.

Café 1 Haziran - 31 Ekim arasında her gün 9:30 – 21:00 arasında açıktır. Kitaplığa toplu taşım araçları ile ulaşabilmek için Ayvalık’tan Alibey Adası’na (Cunda Adası’na) kalkan belediye otobüsleri ve minibüsler kullanılabilir. Ayvalık İskelesinden, Alibey Adası (Cunda) İskelesine her saat başı hareket eden tekneler de bir başka ulaşım alternatifidir. Kitaplık önünde araç park edilecek sınırlı bir alan olmakla birlikte, Ada merkezindeki otoparklar kullanılabilir.
